2009 - 10 SERIES

Since its formation in 1996, Solas has been loudly proclaimed as the most popular, influential, and exciting Celtic band to ever emerge from the United States. The internationally acclaimed supergroup has not only captured the hearts and ears of Irish music fans, but fans all around the globe and across musical genres with their blend of Celtic traditional, folk and country melodies, bluesy, sometimes jazz-inspired improvisations, and global rhythms. Though Solas plays undiluted traditional Irish music as well as anyone alive or departed, they are always varying the mix of fire tested tradition and contemporary sensibility with an ease and naturalness that is as astonishing as their overwhelming musicianship, transcending musical genres into the realm of pure musical expression.

Kathy Mattea, the beloved Grammy-winning artist of such classic hits as "Where’ve You Been" and "18 Wheels and a Dozen Roses" is one of the most respected female country stars of her era. Melding elements of American Roots Music including folk, bluegrass, gospel, country, and Celtic into her own sound, Kathy Mattea has sold over 7 million records, charted 20 Top-10 songs, and has garnered 2 Grammy® Awards and 4 CMA Awards, including two for Best Female Vocalist. In 2008, West Virginia-born Kathy Mattea released her celebrated paired-down traditional folk-style recording, COAL, as both a tribute to, and social commentary on, Appalachia’s mining tradition. This special evening will feature favorites from throughout Ms. Mattea’s career, together with songs to celebrate the season.

Self-proclaimed "industrial re-percussionist", Jonas’ heartwarming work has been enjoyed across North America since 1987. Previously a member of the highly acclaimed duo, "The Billys," he has been featured at prestigious festivals and venues nationwide, having shared stages with some of the world's favorite acoustic artists, including Patti Larkin, Ani DiFranco, David Wilcox, Richard Thompson, and Pete Seeger. Wu Man is an internationally renowned pipa virtuoso, cited by the Los Angeles Times as "The artist most responsible for bringing the pipa to the Western World." She is recognized as an outstanding exponent of traditional repertoire for the pipa--a lute-like Chinese instrument with a history of more than two thousand years--as well as a leading interpreter of contemporary pipa music by today’s most prominent composers. A member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, Grammy-nominated Wu Man has also been a frequent performer and collaborator with the Kronos Quartet and composers Terry Riley and Philip Glass. This collaboration will take place with Montana’s own String Orchestra of the Rockies, in celebration of their 25th anniversary season.

Inspired in part by Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry Murals, the outrageous illustrations of Rube Goldberg, and by Charlie Chaplin’s film, Modern Times, Cirque Mechanics’ show Birdhouse Factory brings together circus acrobatics and early 20th century machines to tell a story of laughter, love, flight, loss and . . . birdhouses. Workers at the H. Rosebud Factory are interconnected by their roles on the assembly line which produces uninspired widgets until a hapless bird flies in to one of their machines, creating mayhem and forever altering their lives and the factory’s future. Brought to life by director Chris Lashua, his inventive machines, an original score, stunning choreography, and the talent of its international cast (former members of Cirque du Soleil, Pickle Family Circus, and the Moscow Circus) Birdhouse Factory is a family-friendly, Broadway-style theatre spectacle.

Chris Thile is doing it with his new outfit, and the result is totally mindblowing." Grammy® nominees for their first album release, members of this group have performed and recorded with a star-studded list of the country’s most prominent instrumentalists, and have graced the stages of legendary clubs and prestigious concert halls across the globe.
